A renovation of an existing two-story NC Air National Guard (NCANG) 145th Air Wing Terminal 5 facility, located at the active Charlotte International Airport. It includes the conversion of the passenger mezzanine increasing the structure size from 13,920 SF to 15,700 SF without changing the building footprint; and a new C-17 Air Drop Facility (7,900 SF) with a Chute Drying Tower (600 SF) adjacent to the existing Terminal 5 facility with access points. The mezzanine addition included new rooftop equipment, replacing roof at access penetrations, installing wet-pipe sprinkler system, ABA compliance updates to elevator and restrooms, relocating mechanical room, installation of the addition’s windows and doors, replacing existing windows and doors to meet ATFP requirements, renovation of building exterior, pavements and utilities, and providing temporary facilities for current occupants. The communication room was relocated and additional communications added for the mezzanine. The facility layout for passenger terminal function and flow was altered to include the new passenger mezzanine. The C-17 Air Drop Facility with a Chute Drying Tower has a 55 ft tall parachute drying tower with two hoists to lift eight cargo type parachutes and a heater and blower system to dry and remove debris. The tower is constructed of structural steel skeleton utilizing brick veneer, Insulated Metal Panels and Kalwall translucent panels with a standing seam metal roof, and built-in fall protection tie-off points. A fire pump with enclosure, a diesel emergency generator, and lightning protection were also installed. The Parachute tower has a recessed epoxy coated slab with an integral epoxy base molding. A very large dehumidification unit is ducted into the tower as well as series of exhaust fans.
