Brantley Construction sprang into action on this design/build project when the College of Charleston students went home for the summer. With only 90 days to complete a $3 million renovation of Joe E. Berry Hall, every minute counted. Major renovation of dormitory rooms, hallways and communal areas had to be factored into those 90 days. The project construction time schedule did not include the $150,000 in change orders that resulted from unforeseen conditions and Owner requested changes that resulted in only a two-day time extension. The dorm rooms and common areas, activity centers and laundry rooms were updated with state-of-the-art materials and vibrant colors. Brightly painted walls, meticulously laid floors and custom crafted woodwork have replaced the hall’s once gloomy institutional look. It took many seven-day workweeks to complete the project on time. It all came together like clockwork with good planning when, at the end of the summer, 640 female students moved back into the dormitory rooms on schedule. The students, architect and college officials loved the finished product and were very pleased with the project.
